On April 25 2005, Angus Munro and Simon Downing set off to ski the width of Greenland, the world's second-largest icecap and largest island. Greenland, like Antarctica, consists of land covered by a permanent, uninhabited dome of solid ice - which endures some of the world's most extreme weather. Towing all their food and equipment for the month-long sled journey, Angus and Simon hauled for 9 days before making the hard decision to turn back after Angus sustained frostbite. The pair returned on ski to their start point, reaching civilisation on day 16. Angus' toes suffered no permanent damage.
The expedition is publicising The KessiaCare Foundation, an Australian charitable foundation. KessiaCare Foundation was founded by the McConnell family in March 2003, following the death of their daughter Kessia. The Foundation aims to foster hope, create choice and assist families of children receiving palliative care or end-of-life care, and support families during early bereavement. In this way, the Foundation seeks to support the primary goal of paediatric palliative care—to enhance quality of life for the child and provide support to the family—in a way which benefits the family as a whole. The Foundation has recently applied to the ATO for charity status. |
